Critical Reflection

For this module, my aim was to improve my presentation skills in front of a huge crowd and also improve on organising my words when writing a letter. I am proud to say that I managed to achieve my aim with the tips and guidance from Prof Brad. I appreciate his patience to guide my classmates and I equip ourselves with the right set of skills for both communication and writing. Some of the things that I learned are the ways on how to summarize articles professionally, use APA style format for my report and to do a presentation professionally. For a start, I did not even know summarizing an article can be so important in my engineering career. It is so important as it can be used to support the product I am working on in my technical report. I am thankful that I managed to learn the skill in this module and I believe I can utilise the skill for my Final Year Project and also my career. During the course module, my classmates and I were given the opportunity to participate in class ...

Annotated Summary Draft 1

As stated on The Guardian website (2018), Jon Henly, cycling using mobile phones is to be officially prohibited in Netherland due to safety concerns. The article states that the law was needed due to the arrival of social media and unlimited mobile data “had changed how people used smartphones and the time they spent on them”. It also states that Netherland has estimated around 22.5 million bikes which is more than its people which estimated around 17 million and almost a quarter of its population cycles every day which lead in 12% increase in cycle use since 2005. Henly states that pedestrians are also "at risk when using their mobile phones near cyclist" and cycling accidents involving mobile phones have become growingly common, especially among young people. According to the article, one-fifth of bike accidents involved people aged 12 to 25 years using smartphones. A polling opinion was made and it shows that 75% of the Dutch population believe that the use of mobile...

Technical Report Draft #1

Background According to the Garmin website (Garmin, n.d -a) the Garmin Edge 830 is not only a bicycle navigation device but it also provides performance monitoring for cyclist training and recovery. One reason why cyclists do not want to use their phones for navigation is that it drains the battery of the phone, and when the cyclist receives a phone call, the screen is changed to reflect the details of the caller, taking precedence over the navigation screen. ‘ This is the reason why a ”customer wants a product that fits one purpose, something they can put up on their big screen”(Taub, 2015). Garmin ( n.d. -b) also states that there are three different mounts that the Edge 830 can be mounted to. The standard mount included in the box has two rubber straps that are used to strap around the bike stem connected to the rubber disc which holds the Garmin Edge.  The second and third mounts provided by Garmin are external mounts that need to be bought, both of the mounts use sc...

Design Summary_Analysis Final

In the web article, “Where’s my supersuit?” Zelik (2019) focuses on the understanding and benefits of implementing exoskeletons around the world, which includes “to keep the workers safe and reduce the fatigue of physically demanding jobs.”  Zelik is interested to see how exoskeleton can be commonly used in public just like smartphones instead of being in the research lab. The article states that the pioneer badge of exoskeleton approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been used to assist worker’s safety aspect and physical aspect.  The article provides in-depth information on  how exoskeleton could help solve complex low back pain issues, support ankle muscles, prevent neck fatigue, provide motorised assistance and also teach proper   lifting techniques. Zelik hopes that the exoskeleton will be commonly used for individual and social benefits. Exoskeleton suit is very beneficial such that it helps to reduce arm fatigues and provide ...

Letter of Introduction

Dear Prof Brad, This letter of introduction serves as an overview of who I am and my goals that I would love to achieve throughout this module. My name is Muhammad Nur Firdaus Bin Rostam. I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. After going through the rigorous training during my time in the Singapore Civil Defence Force, I applied myself to be a student in Singapore Institution of Technology. Currently, I am in my first year taking a Degree in Mechanical Engineering. I hope to broaden my knowledge about engineering and also improve my skills once I graduate from this course in 2021. I have quite a number of hobbies that includes playing football, travelling and a cycling. These hobbies have contributed to the development of my communication and analytical skills, as travelling allows me to interact with people from various countries and backgrounds while playing football allows me to think of strategic formation and pla...
